Type Locality and Naming

This formation is mainly in the western portion (e.g., Adrar and Hohd sub-basins) of the Taoudeni Basin, which a vast intracratonic sedimentary basin spanning parts of Mauritania, Mali, Algeria, Burkina Faso and Guinea.

Lithology and Thickness

The Tenemouj Gr is characterized at the top and base by sandstones, and in the middle by carbonates. "Sandy limestone" pattern used here to emphasize the carbonate component in the graphics.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

unconformably (early Devonian is absent?) overlies the Oued Chig Gr

Upper contact

unconformably (entire Permian through mid-Cretaceous is absent) overlain by the Continental Intercalaire Fm,

Regional extent

This formation is mainly in the western portion (e.g., Adrar-Hohd sub-basin) of the Taoudeni Basin; but might not have any equivalent in the Hodh-Afolle subbasin of the western Taoudeni Basin (Martin-Monge et al., 2016). The group is the equivalent of the combined El Guettara Gr and Dagouber Gr in the Hank Subbasin of eastern Taoudeni Basin (Martin-Monge et al., 2016).

Martin-Monge et al. (2016) summary figure schematically indicates a span of middle Devonian to nearly the top of the Carboniferous (but not the Gzhelian Stage at the top of Carboniferous); however, it is questionable if it indeed encompasses the late Carboniferous.
